Through the Windows

by cc0028 @ 2006-03-01 - 18:54:19

Just a quick update ...

Thanks to the unfailing efforts of my friends in our Systems and Comms Department (Craig and Mark), I now have the Windows version of my applications up and running:

This is the Windows version
This is the Linux version

All I need to do now is to add the startup application that will redirect users to different versions on a random basis. It will be the URL of that application that I will want users to visit, not either of the ones above, which will be the ones to which they will be redirected. Once that is available I can start asking people to perform the experiment.

Hi there,

I clicked on the link and got the guidance page but could not click back with the back key on my keyboard, could only do this manouevre with the back arrow key on screen. I clicked onto the Adobe download link and couldn't get back to your page. I had to close out and go back into blog via my usual route (till I get my experiments going with F/fox). I didn't try anything else at this stage; I am rather nervous of doing so as I feel unconfident in your MSc environment.

Don't worry. You can't hurt anything. Honest.

To get back to the introductory page, just click on the link again: but you're right, it is easier in Firefox where you can have lots of tabs open. Helps navigation no end.

The actual data entry task only takes a minute or so. And you can do it as often as you like. When I have the final URL ready, it will direct users at random to either the Windows or the Linux version. Users will not notice any difference - but it means if you do the task, say, half a dozen times I'll get about three Linux versions and about three Windows versions.

The proper URL will be ready in a couple of days I should think.

I look forward to the ride. :)

Hmmm. I don't think it's that exciting! It's rather flattering that anyone is interested at all, to be honest.

PS - Once I got to the data input page I had to close out as I couldn't get back to blogs any other way. Not terribly important for me but might be of interest to you.

Hmm. Not sure how IE works. On Firefox you can open the browser history by clicking a little arrow next to the back button and selecting the page you want to go back to.

Of course if the worst comes to the worst, you can always just type the address of the page you want to return to into the address bar above your browser window. For instance to get back to my blog, I'd just type:

peredur.blog.co.uk

into the address bar. If you've ever done that before, IE should offer to complete the address for you without you having to type it all.

Putting your blog url in only allows me to comment as a visitor and I really can't be faffed with all the ID details it wants. I'd rather just go through to the blog.co.uk route.

I have printed off your instructions for F/fox and will get onto it soon.

That's odd. If I enter myword.blog.co.uk into my browser it takes me straight to your blog and I can just click on "Reply to comment" or whatever and just enter text as normal.

Very strange.
